Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) are a well-recognized but often underestimated occupational and environmental hazard within the oil and gas industry. This presentation examines the radiological risks associated with NORM and NORM waste, emphasizing the need for robust characterization, control and continuous improvement programs consistent with the Canadian Guidelines for the Management of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (Health Canada, 2022).
The presentation will also discuss the importance of applying the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle through a structured NORM management program, offering a framework for oil and gas health and safety professionals to identify, assess and manage NORM risks. By embedding radiological safety into standard operational and waste-management practices, the sector can reduce exposure, regulatory risk, and societal cost—demonstrating leadership in sustainable, evidence-based energy safety.
