Description

Safety depends not only on procedures and training, but also on what workers understand in practice. Before each shift, crews review hazards, discuss risks, and make decisions that rely on safety knowledge, judgment, and clear instruction. Yet one important question often remains difficult to answer: how well do workers understand and apply the knowledge needed to work safely? That gap can affect training priorities, supervisor follow-up, worker readiness, and the potential for knowledge gaps to contribute to incidents.

This presentation introduces Bridge, a platform being developed at the Schulich School of Engineering – University of Calgary, to help organizations better understand safety knowledge across their workforce. Bridge brings together short, practical interactive applications designed for moments when safety knowledge needs to be assessed, reinforced, or discussed, such as during inductions, pre-job planning, and toolbox talks.

Over time, Bridge will integrate multiple applications addressing different aspects of operational safety. By aggregating results across users, the platform can help organizations identify patterns, reveal knowledge gaps, support decision-making, and create opportunities for future benchmarking.

This Safety Talk introduces Bridge through an application designed to assess workers’ ability to identify hazards using the Energy Wheel concept. It will illustrate how short digital tools can help organizations assess safety knowledge and integrate these insights into existing safety management systems and daily safety practices.
