Description

Alberta continues to demonstrate leadership in applying restorative justice principles through its innovative use of creative sentencing. By directing funds from workplace incidents toward meaningful safety initiatives, the province is transforming adverse events into opportunities for industry-wide learning and prevention.

These creative sentencing projects are designed to generate practical resources, tools, and guidance that help mitigate the risk of similar incidents in the future—ultimately strengthening safety performance across sectors.

Energy Safety Canada (ESC) has been at the forefront of this effort, effectively leveraging awarded funds to develop high-impact resources aimed at preventing serious injuries and fatalities. This session features ESC project managers who have led and delivered on these initiatives.

In this presentation, speakers will:

  • Provide an overview of Alberta’s approach to restorative justice and creative sentencing
  • Highlight key projects funded through creative sentences and the resources developed
  • Share updates on ongoing initiatives, including upcoming tools and expected outcomes
  • Engage participants in a discussion on the broader impact and future potential of creative sentencing

Attendees are encouraged to bring questions and perspectives as part of an interactive dialogue on the evolving impact of creative sentencing and its role in advancing workplace safety.
